On October 18, 2009, Josh and Emily were on their way to Emily's parents house in Port Angeles, WA to celebrate her mother's birthday. They were driving at a safe 55mph when an oncoming car lost control, careened across the road and into their lane. Josh, the driver, had no time to react and they ended up colliding straight into the driver's side of the other car. Tragically, both occupants of that vehicle were killed instantly.. a grandmother and her young grandson. Josh had minor injuries (broken nose and eye socket, collapsed lung, sprained ankle and a pretty nasty case of whiplash) and was hospitalized in stable condition at Olympic Memorial Hospital in Port Angeles, WA. Emily was life-flighted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries. She had massive internal injuries, broken neck, broken back, broken elbow, several cracked ribs, and soft tissue damage to both legs from colliding with the dashboard. Upon arrival to Harborview, she was immediately taken to the OR where the doctors worked feverishly to stop her bleeding and save her life.
It was touch and go for Emily for several days but thanks to the efforts of the surgeons, her own fighting spirit, and the mercy of God, she made it through the critical period and is now recovering from her various injuries. She will be in a halo for her broken neck for 3 months and is expected to remain in the hospital for 4-6 weeks as she undergoes physical therapy and becomes strong enough to go back to her own home. Josh and Emily were just married on September 12, 2009 and are like most young newlyweds just starting out. This accident has impacted them not only physically but financially as well. Emily was the main breadwinner for the family while Josh attends school and she will be unable to work for 6+ months. Josh has had to drop his classes for the current term while he is here at Emily's bedside while she recovers. He will then have to leave and find a job that will support them until Emily is able to work again sometime next year.
A fund has been set up for Josh and Emily to help with their day to day and monthly expenses such as rent, utilities, car payments, food, etc. Any amount will help - both Josh and Emily are extremely grateful for anything you might be able to donate as well as the ongoing prayers and thoughts that everyone has sent their way. You can keep up with the progress of Emily on the Facebook group that has been started for them. This details both Josh and Emily's healing process since the time of the accident and is updated on a daily basis. Newspaper Coverage of the accident12/24/09 - Peninsula Daily News
